A difficulty that I have recently come across when attempting to redesign the kitchen, in order for it to fit the resident’s requested criteria more closely, is the addition of more social seating/space in the limited size of the space. After taking photographs of kitchen and realising the limited space which is available- I stepped away from the direct space, went outside, and realised that more space could be added by adding a balcony/attached pavilion to the side of each flat: In this primary source photograph, it shows the available space to design an idea of knocking through the windows in order to attach a balcony.
This would be beneficial for the design by changing the external appearance of the existing building- therefore, adhering to the client’s request.
In order to move this idea forward, I will research existing balconies, potentially in wider contexts, such as skyscrapers and various forms of communal living. This will aid me in having a broad understanding of the different existing designs and how I can combine them to design and model the most effective and fitting balcony for the site.
